Nine Days in November
By william cheevers
Follows nine days in the life of a police sergeant turned private investigator in mid-20th century Chicago. The crimes he encounters are reprehensible or tragic but none challenge his faith in the laws of the Pale, an imaginary line named after a 14th century barrier separating civilized life in Ireland from an uncivilized world outside the limits of acceptable behavior. One morning the detective is having breakfast at his favorite diner and takes a telephone call that draws him into the world Beyond the Pale.
