Crook's career began in 1865 when he was assigned as a White House guard in January 1865. Unfortunately, he was not on duty when President Lincoln was assassinated in Ford's Theater on April 14, 1865, and so could do nothing to prevent this tragic event. Yet, despite this, Crook continued to work as bodyguard for Lincoln's successor, Andrew Johnson, before being appointed "Executive Clerk of the President of the United States" by Ulysses S. Grant in 1870 and dispersing agent in1877, a role that he would hold for the rest of his career.
