4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

In an age of gunslingers and forgotten towns, the Army of the Light rules with a searing, bright fist. Sep didn’t choose to be a shader—to move unseen through the shadows—but when the Light came for him, he fought back. On the run, he befriends a family of mercenaries and uncovers a legend of fatal Angels that just might hold the key to who he is and how to save his sister. If he’s going to survive, he’ll have to make a choice: run, fight, or give into the growing darkness inside.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In the aftermath of war, a fearless mother with a powerful gift and a hunted boy trying to stay alive see their lives collide in the genre-defying novel, That BlindingDarkness by John-Mark Kruger. An unexpectedly compassionate and thought-provoking tale, filled with well-crafted symbolism and timeless themes reflected in unusual ways, this unique and compelling read is wildly original... Kruger deserves high praise for this masterfully constructed mixture of western, sci-fi, and dystopian fiction." - Self-Publishing Review

"That Blinding Darkness is a work of fiction in the action, fantasy adventure, and interpersonal drama sub-genres, and was penned by author John-Mark Kruger. The work is intended for the young adult and upward reading audience and transports readers to a far-flung world of dangerous supernatural figures and gunslinging fighters with survival on their minds. Our protagonist is Sep, a young man on the run with the unique stealth abilities of a shader, who finds himself taken in by a band of rebellious fighters as he struggles to find and save his sister. What results is a highly engrossing fantasy and western-style tale that is sure to keep readers turning the pages from cover to cover.

Author John-Mark Kruger has crafted a masterfully immersive work of fiction with plenty of thrills, spills, and sudden surprises to offer its readers. One of the most essential features of this work was the talent the author displays in worldbuilding through such details as the different roles that various characters take up in this new society, the terminology they use, and their reasons for rebelling against those who hold power over them. I also enjoyed the fact that the narrative was quite dialogue and interaction heavy, which would certainly help YA readers to stay interested in the plot and to deliver storyline and relationship details in a naturalistic way. Overall, I would highly recommend That Blinding Darkness to fans of new twists on classic genres, high octane, and highly visual action sequences and for readers of dark, gritty adventure novels everywhere." - Reader's Favorite

John-Mark Kruger's first novel exceeded all of my expectations. It has everything from magical powers to witty sarcasm... both of which I am a huge fan. There is an incredible story of adventure that brings you through beautiful lands and desecrated battlefields. Who would have thought you could weaponize light and darkness in such a unique and intriguing way. How does he do this you ask? You will just have to read and see. Reading this will not disappoint, and I highly recommend reading it all in one sitting. Make the time... you have plenty.
