Onward to my review of a such a suspenseful book though. 🙂
First off, I really love the characters that Melinda writes in her books, especially in Say You’re Sorry. If you’ve ever read a Melinda Leigh book then you’ll realize from the beginning that she writes some strong female leads into her stories. The female lead that always knows how to handle herself and that is just one of many reasons why I’m addicted to Melinda’s books. I always love strong female leads.
The female lead in Say You’re Sorry is definitely one I adored. Morgan Dane is a widow who lost her husband overseas in the military. She’s living with her grandfather with her three little ones trying to get her life back together. She’s definitely doing an amazing job at it. She’s moving on to big things on working with the District Attorney’s office. Although, life is about to be turned upside down, when her babysitter is killed in Scarlett Falls and the boyfriend/Morgan’s neighbor is accused of the girls’ murder. It’s up to Morgan to prove his innocence. She has the help of her friend, Lance Kruger who happens to be a private investigator to help her along the way.
Melinda Leigh brought on the suspense in this story, which made it hard to put down. I wanted to follow along with Morgan and Lance and uncover who was actually behind the murder. It was great to read the different POVs in the story and I really enjoyed getting to follow along with Morgan, Lance, the boyfriend/neighbor Nick, and even the killer (who I couldn’t figure out who he/she was). Melinda Leigh definitely kept me guessing on who was behind it all.
I loved Lance’s character because he truly was a gentleman trying so hard to keep his feelings over Morgan under bay. Poor guy. He was definitely in love with her. Morgan though is grieving still and she realizes it in the story what she needs to do. The ending had me in tears because of what she finally got the courage to to do, which made it where she finally decided on her next steps.
Overall, this was an amazing book and I really wish I could give it more than 5 stars. I look forward to making time to read the second book in the series before the third one comes out next year. I’m cracking down and finally making time to catch up on the books I’ve had on my to read list for a while now. I’m also happy to read one of my favorite authors books and finally catch up, so I can keep up with every book she comes up with. 🙂
Morgan Dane is a bad ass widow and runs into her high school sweetheart and they begin to work together!
Morgan Dane was offered a position as the Scarlet Falls Assistant District Attorney by District Attorney Bryce Walters. Morgan is widowed with three small children. As she contemplates her decision - she gets a call from Evelyn Palmer; Tessa's grandmother. She tells Morgan that Tessa is missing and that she had an argument with Tessa and she took off.
Morgan talks to Lance Kruger - he's a former police officer; now a Private Investigator. They are looking for Tessa. She was last seen at a party at the Scarlet Falls Lake with her boyfriend Nick Zabrowski. Morgan and Lance go to the lake and they find her car. Morgan finds Tessa's car keys and cellphone - there's blood on the cellphone case. They continue on the trail and Morgan has a bad feeling - she finds the body of Tessa - she was violently stabbed to death.
Lance goes to work at "Sharp Investigations"; his boss, Lincoln Sharp hands him a missing persons case - 16 year old Jamie Lewis has been missing for two months. There are no leads and her mother is desperate to find her.
Nick is arrested for the violent murder and rape of Tessa. The knife and other items were found in his backyard.
Morgan and Lance begin their investigation of Tessa's murder. They begin with interviewing Tessa's friends - they can't believe that Nick could commit murder.
Who killed Tessa and put the blame on Nick? He's in the county jail - how will he ever survive?
Melinda's attention to detail is dramatic and graphic - from her description of the bloody scene to her love for her dead husband, the love she has for her kids and grandpa and finally the mental illness of Jennifer Kruger - Lance's mom; the reader can empathize with the characters. Melinda has created a story with true-to-life characters; these are people you care about. You can feel Morgan's vulnerability - she's been alone for so long - could she ever let a man into her life? Lance takes care of his mom, Jennifer. She's agoraphobic and has depression and anxiety. He doesn't want to get involved with anyone because of his mom's mental illness.
You won't believe who the murderer is!! I'll not give that away!!
This is Book 1 of the Morgan Dane Series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this! I look forward to Book 2!!
